The Many Attractions in Arrecife

Arrecife city is currently Lanzarote’s capital with a 46,000 population. This makes it the largest city on the island. It is a harbor city which obtained its name through the presence of abundant reefs around its coast. There are many visitor attractions in Arrecife which include historical monuments, tantalizing seafood restaurants and many shops.

Historical attractions

This city boasts of two castles; the 16th century Castillo of San Gabriel is the oldest castle on the tiny islet situated opposite the city. It is easily accessible through a causeway. This Castillo houses a small museum which exhibits information on the island’s original inhabitants. The other castle is at the city’s outskirts; the bigger San Jose Castillo sports a pleasant Art Gallery and an artistically designed restaurant by the famous Cesar Manrique who is a sculptor and an architect.

Arrecife’s most prominent landmark is the Gran Hotel. It was Cesar Manrique’s efforts in stopping the building of a modern tower hotel in the city during the sixties. Although the high rise was halted for many years, it is now completed. There are no buildings over 4 storey’s in Arrecife to avoid the city from being ruined with high towers. Manrique managed to design some of Arrecife’s best attractions.

Tourists Attractions

The city lagoon at Charco San Gines is a lovely spot for locals and tourists to hang out; it is a quiet spot surrounded by old houses, restaurants and tapas bars. The Playa del Reducto is the main beach for Arrecife. There is a nice esplanade at the beach that has many palm trees, pubs and bars which make the perfect relaxing stop.

Arrecife will thrill shopaholics with its delightful shopping area with many choices of goods. There is a myriad of boutiques for the ladies and electrical shops for the guys. The numerous pavement cafés at the shopping area are appropriate for shoppers to rest and relax over a cup of coffee or glass of beer before continuing with their shopping delight. It may be necessary to bargain for the best deals.

Nightlife in rent villas spain is generally quiet with the emphasis on local cafés or music bars. However, Arrecife offers some of the best gastronomy choices for local Canarian food.
